San Jose Mercury News One of the questions that came up with the 49ers signing Isaac Bruce was what number he’d wear, since his entire 14-year career has been in No. 80 but that number in San Francisco belongs now and forever to Jerry Rice.
Bruce said on a conference call last week that he didn’t know what he’ll do. Rice, on his Sirius satellite radio show, said he’d give it a thumbs-up. From the transcript:
“I have always respected Isaac Bruce. I don’t know what is going to happen in that scenario, but if it was left up to me I would say yeah. For Steve Largent to do what he did for me, he showed me a side of him where I just feel like I have to do the same thing. He set the standard. It would be left up to Isaac and myself to sit down and talk or if the 49ers decide to do something like that, it is OK with me.”
