Contra Costa Times Jerry Rice has assumed so many identities in his NFL afterlife, you never know where he'll pop up next.
Will he be the judge when you show up at jury duty? Will he be driving the garbage truck past your curb? If you need new penny loafers, will he be asking for your shoe size?
Rice has traded in his 20-year, record-setting NFL career for nothing remotely resembling retirement. He's been a ballroom dancer on ABC, a NASCAR grand marshal in Sonoma, a Pro vs. a Joe, a "Soulja Boy" on YouTube, and, for the creme de la creme, a media colleague.
His latest identity, though, really is a perfect fit, and he ought to settle into it for years to come. He's a mentor to up-and-coming NFL wide receivers, with Cal's DeSean Jackson his current project.
Now pause and ponder: Could this be Rice's stepping stone to a NFL head-coaching job? Rice loves the game, bathes in the spotlight and offers legendary credentials.
